One of the greatest joys and reliefs for a student or a grown-up adult is when the festive seasons are around the corner. Similarly, for the Indians and a few other nations, Diwali is the festival looked forward to by many. India is known as the land of festivals but no festivities come as close to Diwali. It is the festival of light consisting of family gatherings, sweets, firecrackers, colourful decorations and is celebrated with great fervour and delight. Diwali is also known as Dipawali and falls during the month of October/November.

This festival is celebrated nearly 20 days after the great Vijaya Dashami Festival. Spiritually and culturally, Diwali is very significant as it represents the victory of good over evil. The festival of Diwali is associated with various Hindu Mythologies. According to the Puranas, It is said that Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth was born on the day of the new moon which fell around the time between October and November.

Hindu people celebrate the birth of Goddess Lakshmi and worship her. People believe to start having fortunate encounters to wealth if worshipped therefore high regard is held for her. Diwali is also celebrated on the return of Lord Rama who returned to his kingdom of Ayodhya along with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshman after spending 14 years in exile. This story is told in the holy book of Ramayana.

This 5-day long festival is mostly awaited by children who love to eat sweets and use firecrackers. It starts out by keeping the surroundings clean. Houses, other buildings, areas around them, etc are cleaned and then decorated. They are decorated with bright bright lights, colorful lanterns, Diyos(earthen oil lamps ), candles, flowers, and rangolis. This decoration usually takes place in the evening time and most of the cleaning is done in the mornings. After the decorations, people wear neat dresses and start the worshipping of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi.

During the worshipping time, the entire surroundings are peaceful with sounds of ringing bells and chants. Sweets and other eateries are distributed among friends and relatives and children/adults start enjoying. They light up rockets, burst crackers, and enjoy the night. The decorations of the lights and other objects truly make a mesmerizing view in the eyes of the one in the night. On such an auspicious occasion, people open new account books, on the belief that this festival will bring forth more wealth and prosperity. People also shop for new accessories and clothes and look forward to exchanging gifts with their family, friends, and relatives during the festival.

Although it is a festival of great importance, we should also keep in mind the pollution it is causing. The sheer amount of bursting of firecrackers and rockets degrade the quality of air, cause sound pollution resulting in irritation and cases of being deaf, and land pollution. Children can also get hurt this way and can be injured. We should celebrate such a great festival in an eco-friendly way. The government should help limit the number of firecrackers step by step and make proper plans and policies to reduce pollution.

But to sum it all up, Diwali is a festival that is one of the greatest in the world. The beautiful and bright colors in the night sky truly make it live up to the name of being the festival of lights.
